Noto

A must-see destination for visitors to Eastern Sicily is Noto.

Noto is a city located in the province of Siracusa, in Sicily, Italy. It is famous for its Baroque architecture and for being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.

The city was founded in the 5th century BC by the Greeks and was then conquered by various peoples, including the Romans, Normans, and Arabs. This has left a unique cultural heritage in the city, which can be seen in its historic buildings.

The historic center of Noto was completely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693, which destroyed much of the city. The architects and artists who worked on the reconstruction created a unique Baroque architecture, with facades decorated with floral and grotesque motifs and large arched windows.

Among the main historic buildings in Noto, one can mention: the Cathedral of San Nicolò, which is considered an example of Sicilian Baroque architecture; the Church of San Carlo, with its facade decorated with floral motifs; and the Church of Santa Chiara, with its beautiful cloister.

In addition to its architecture, Noto is also famous for its cuisine. The city is famous for its sweets, including the “Noto Cremolosa”, a kind of ice cream, and the “Cassata Noto”, a sweet made of ricotta and chocolate.

In general, Noto is a very appreciated tourist destination for its architectural beauty and its rich cultural history, but also for its cuisine and its geographical location, a few kilometers from other important cities like Siracusa.
